Chief Justice Ronald M. George to be Keynote Speaker at CWL's 34th Annual Dinner
by Jean Pledger, CWL President-Elect
Chief Justice Ronald M. George
Ronald M. George, Chief Justice of California, will be California
Women Lawyer's first male keynote speaker at CWL's 34th
Annual Dinner in Monterey on Thursday, September 25, 2008.
"We believe that it is fitting to have the Chief Justice as CWL's first
male keynote speaker as he has been an avid supporter of CWL for many
years," said Jean M. Pledger, President-Elect. Pledger will be sworn in as
President at the event.
Chief Justice George is the author of the majority opinion in the In Re
Marriage Cases, which decision struck down California laws that
prohibited same-sex couples from marrying. He will be speaking
regarding the way the Court is a positive counter-majoritarian force that
protects the rights of minority groups.
Hon. Ronald M. George was born on March 11, 1940, in Los
Angeles, California. He attended public schools in Los Angeles County,
graduated from Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School of Public
and International Affairs in 1961, and received his J.D. degree from
Stanford Law School in 1964. He was appointed by Governor Pete
Wilson as an Associate Justice of the California Supreme Court in 1991
and as Chief Justice in 1996.
CWL's Annual Dinner is held every year on the opening Thursday night
of the California State Bar Conference. The Dinner includes the
presentation of CWL's Fay Stender Award, which honors a woman who
exemplifies the attributes of the award's namesake. This year's Fay
Stender awardee is Judge Julie Conger of the Alameda County
Superior Court.
